Much Rain Mate?

What is the go with this weather?!

Come and have a cuppa, breakfast and get informed on Climate Mate by Vicki Mayne, a beef producer and Climate Mate officer with Northern Australia Climate Program. Vicki understands how important it is to marry seasonal forecast knowledge with economical and practical application to achieve productivity and sustainability.

We are trying something new with a breakfast and a bite size presentation that you can fit in before work. We know that sometimes there is too much to take in during a full day event and often people have trouble taking a full day off to attend our events. This time you won't have to miss out!

Grazing Management Workshop and Field Day

Join us at our field day at “Tarrawonga” on Friday 22nd September as we learn the principles of the Grazing Naturally method.

Nature’s Equity’s Dick Richardson will lead an entertaining and instructional day covering the basics of ecology and plant growth, and the fundamentals of Grazing Naturally, a grazing management approach to addressing ecological decline in grazing agriculture in changing climatic and economic conditions. You will learn a farm management system that is highly adaptable for you to implement in a way that suits your style, location and operation.

Wyaga graziers Bryan and Tom Lahey will take us on a tour of ‘Tarrawonga’ where the family run predominately Angus females using Wagyu bulls, and trade cattle depending on the season. Bryan and Tom have a focus on building soil health through grazing management practices, and will explain their cell grazing system and experiments with pasture cropping.

We will also hear from ANZ Regional Executive Jeff Schrale on what’s changing with banking and what it means for your business.

RSVPs close 8am Tuesday 19th September.

Multi-Species Cropping Day

Join us for a tour of Sophie And Adrian McInnerney's farm "Bellhaven Brook" and see the home of their paddock to plate enterprise Macintyre Brook Lamb, as well as some multi-species crops and a riparian fencing project.

Ian Beard, Wyreema farmer and cover cropper of ten years, will present on multi-species cropping, soil biology, fertilising (including DIY) and machinery, giving us practical applications for modern day farming.

We are excited to have Ian back after his highly popular presentation at our field day last year at Justin and Kate Boshammer's farm "Camilaroi West", Condamine.

Ian Beard has been farming since the 1980s and has experience in grain growing, horticulture, sheep and cattle. He is passionate about using practical methods to improve soil health, yield and profit.

Ian has been experimenting with multi-species cover cropping for 10 years with impressive results. He enjoys sharing practical knowledge and recipes to other farmers to achieve these outcomes.

Find out if multi-species cropping is worth the effort, and how to make soil biology work for you.

Your ticket includes two one-hour group Zoom meetings with Ian Beard at 7pm on Monday 7 September and Monday 4 December, where Ian will answer your questions about applying multi-species cropping practices on your farm.

GUEST SPEAKERS –

Jason Trompf

Jason is the founder Of Lambs Alive and key developer & educator of the programs Lifetime Ewe Management and Bred Well Fed Well

His ethos is to produce more from less and guide farmers on how they can use their existing resources to make sustainable change across multiple points of the lambing season.

Jason’s presentation at our upcoming field day will focus on the key foundations of productive and adaptable sheep enterprise - enabling you to flex to varying seasonal conditions - including the balance of traits needed for a productive resilient ewe.

We will also enjoy a practical session, where Jason will outline the key traits underpinning a productive, resilient ewe, using Karbullah stud sheep.

JUSTIN and LORROI KIRKBY

Justin and Lorroi, together with their sons Sam, Flynn and Jock, run Amarula Dorper and White Dorper Stud at Gravesend, comprising 1000 Dorper stud ewes and 500 White Dorper stud ewes, and cattle when season permits.

In 2021 Justin and Lorroi won the Australian Government’s Landcare Farming Award, after revitalising their degraded farm into biodiverse grasslands, through activities such as planting 8000 trees and 140,000 saltbush, pasture cropping, multi-species cover cropping, removing chemical inputs as much as possible, adaptive grazing, and water and wire, subdividing the farm from 12 to 52 paddocks so far.

Justin and Lorroi will speak about their family’s regenerative journey, as well as the different challenges that sheep and cattle pose in regenerating country, and approaches to managing grazing impact.

CHLOE BUNTER

Chloe is the MERINOSELECT Development Officer of Sheep Genetics with Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) based in Armidale and has been part of the team since October 2021.

Chloe will be talking about ASBVs (Australian Sheep Breeding Values) – what they are and how to use them.

She will discuss the different tools available for commercial clients to utilise ASBVs, how to choose a high performing sire, the different traits available and how to interpret accuracy of ASBV’s.

KARBULLAH

Karbullah is a family operated SRS merino stud run by Mark & Victoria Murphy with the help of their two sons Ben & Luke and their partners, Steph and Sarah.

Located 70km north of Goondiwindi, Karbullah is a ‘next generation’ merino stud focused on producing a dual-purpose merino.

They have been specialising in high productivity, superior wool with a strong carcass, fertility and survivability characteristics. Boasting one of Australia’s highest lamb survival rates, particularly notable for a farm that doesn’t drench their ewe base for worms.

The Murphy family run 700 stud ewes with 300 commercial ewes & 150 breeder cows on 8000 acres of Belah/Brigalow country.

They have been using Old Man saltbush to help droughtproof the property, and in the last couple of years have been incorporating multispecies farming and improved pastures to help the soil biology and create a better feed base and diversity.

Join us on 16th June as the Murphy family take us on a tour of “Karbullah”.
