Agribusiness Summit 2023 - Richard and Janet Doyle

Having eliminated the use of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers on their Boggabilla property “Malgarai”, Richard and Janet Doyle’s focus is on soil health and biodiversity.

The Doyles hosted day one of the 2023 MAA Agribusiness Summit in partnership with Bigambul Native Title Corporation, taking guests on a farm tour of the property, which covers 6000 acres of mainly floodplain country near the NSW/QLD border.

Richard and Janet largely run a beef trading business, expanding into breeding F1 Wagyu heifers in 2021.

They practice regenerative agriculture practices in their grazing systems and have been converting cultivation back into grazing over the last 10 years. Investing in water and wire is a feature of their business, with paddock ‘cells’ linked to central watering points creating a set-up of 83 paddocks across the property that allows them to move cattle so they can manage groundcover effectively.

Richard and Janet also have two stewardship agreements in place on the property – one funded 12 years ago by the federal government and one 3 years ago by state (NSW) government to improve condition of threatened ecological communities on ‘Malgarai’.

The farm tour of “Malgarai” was thoroughly enjoyable and informative. The ability to ‘kick the dirt’, ask questions and see real-world application of innovative practices was an invaluable part of the event and provided a particular example of many of the themes introduced earlier in the day.

This event was proudly partnered by Bigambul Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, and supported by B&W Rural, Growth Agriculture, and NAB. The event received funding from the Queensland Government’s Natural Resources Recovery Program.
