Carbon Farming
Regenerative agriculture and carbon trading was a hot topic at Southern Queensland Landscapes’ Carbon Farming forum at the Royal Hotel.
Guest speakers Terry McCosker (RCS) and Anne Coote (Climate Friendly) delivered an information filled session covering topics like how to measure soil carbon, what the requirements of a carbon contract to when you would get paid if you were to join the scheme. The information delivered was added to by a local Agronomist in Ian Moss (FARM Agronomy Resource Management) and local landholders who have joined the carbon farming adventure.
One of the key conversations for some farmers was that carbon farming can be done in cropping country and that it is not just about ‘locking up’ country. Carbon farming is about improving land management for every farming enterprise. The passive nature of the programme is an additional income without increasing their workload.
The combination of administrative and practical information that looked at global markets through to paddock scale implementation was a information treasure trove for landholders that are trying to understand the future farming landscape.
